Vera has been a social and political activist most of her life, but now spends her days attending funerals and searching for words that escape her mind. At the end of an arduous cross-country bicycle trip, the rudderless Leo seeks refuge in his Grandma Vera’s West Village apartment. He has lost his best friend in a traumatic accident, is estranged from his girlfriend, and is not on good terms with the rest of his family, so it is impossible for him to celebrate the completion of his Pacific to Atlantic feat.
Over the course of a single month, the unlikely roommates infuriate and bewilder each other. Her politics and his lifestyle - perhaps hippie is the best way to describe Leo - result in some interesting cultural and familial clashes. However, despite their differences, they ultimately reach each other. Filled with humor mixed with a splash of pathos, “4000 Miles” becomes a wonderful portrait of a strong cross-generational relationship.
