WITH PAINTED SKY OPERA

FEBRUARY 23 - MARCH 4, 2018

For more than seventy years, the name of Florence Foster Jenkins has been synonymous with unintended comedy for fans of classical singing.  Her recordings of out-of-tune and mumbled songs were passed from one music lover to another as an example of the worst singing that recorded history had to offer.  Most amazingly, Florence had no idea that she was terrible.

Stephen Temperley details Florence’s rise to “fame” in this hilarious and touching two-person play with incidental music.  Told from the point of view of Florence’s long-suffering pianist, Cosmé McMoon, Souvenir delves into the long relationship between pianist and singer and reveals how true beauty can come from the least beautiful of singing voices.

The Navy lawyer, a callow young man more interested in softball games than the case, expects a plea bargain and a cover-up of what really happened. Prodded by a female member of his defense team, the lawyer eventually makes a valiant effort to defend his clients and, in so doing, pays tribute to the honor of the men and women who serve this country in uniform.

Three Decembers

WITH PAINTED SKY OPERA

MAY 11 - 13, 2018

Based on a play by Terrence McNally, this opera by modern American composer Jake Heggie follows an aging Broadway star over 20 years as her adult children deal with the fallout of their upbringing and learn the shocking secret that their mother has been keeping from them.   During her long career on the stage, Madeleine Mitchell has neglected her children and, as they reach adulthood, still seems to care little for what matters to them.  Her daughter Beatrice idolizes her long-dead father while being stuck in an unhappy marriage herself.

Del Shores' 6 Characters

WITH CARPENTER SQUARE THEATRE

FEBRUARY 18, 2018

“Sordid Lives” and "Southern Baptist Sissies" creator Del Shores returns to Oklahoma City for one day only with his new one-man show, “Six Characters in Search of a Play.”

“Six Characters in Search of a Play” performs at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 18 at Carpenter Square Theatre, located at 800 W. Main in downtown Oklahoma City. Reserved seats are $30. The box office window and concessions will open one hour prior to curtain time. Please note: the performance contains adult language.

For this hilarious and provocative piece, Shores riffs on Pirandello’s classic play (“Six Characters in Search of an Author”) to bring audiences six characters inspired by his real-life encounters that haven’t quite made it into one of Shores’ plays, films or TV shows. In 90 minutes, the audience will hear the truth behind how he collected these eccentrics, then he will portray them in classic Shores’ monologue style. The audience will walk away knowing “Yvonne”, the vegetarian-hating Texas waitress; “Sarah”, an elderly actress who is determined to drink and smoke herself to death if Trump is elected; “Jimmy Ray”, the evolving Georgia redneck, “Loraine”; the once brilliant drama teacher who has lost her mind and is now obsessed with porn; “Aunt Bobbie Sue” the loud-mouth racist Republican with a heart of gold; and “Marsha”, the monkey-hating lesbian with CPOD. Shores’ longtime collaborator Emerson Collins directs.

Reservations are highly recommended for reserved seating in the intimate 100-seat theater. For tickets, please call the Carpenter Square Theatre box office at 405-232-6500.
